Background to Fuelwise

Fuelwise was started in 1989 by my late father Gerry Kelly. Gerry had a lot of knowledge about the industry having previously driven HGV’s and then having worked for a well known local fuel supplier.

In 1989 Gerry combined this knowledge and contacted a few filling stations with the idea of fuel bunkering which would allow Northern Irish drivers to take advantage of the savings in the Republic of Ireland. This “new idea” began to grow and word of mouth soon spread around and the company began to grow organically.

Initially a driver would go to one of these filling stations and sign for the fuel. At the end of the month a report would be sent to our office in Coleraine, N. Ireland where it would be broken down and separated into invoices for each individual customer.

Now of course all this is done through the fuel card which has Chip & PIN technology. Each night all the information is polled through the telephone lines to a central computer which reads the information and breaks it down accordingly. In 1998, after 9 years of continual growth, a deal was struck with UK Fuels to allow Fuelwise to use their network of sites in both Ireland and the UK giving Fuelwise customers access to the largest network of sites in Ireland and a comprehensive network in the UK. This has help distinguish us from other competitors as we offer the largest choice of sites in Ireland – currently over 800 refuelling points available. At the end of 2000 I returned from working in England and Scotland to work along side my father. In November 2001 Gerry passed away. This was a shock to our family and to Fuelwise. In taking over the business under difficult circumstances I have tried to maintain the same dynamics that had been established and had seen the company grow and form a great reputation in the fuel card business.

Over the last 8 years we have witnessed many changes. Our office in Galway, which was established in 2003, is a vital part to our growing business and sustaining our reputation with clients in the Republic of Ireland.

Our Office in Coleraine has slowly expanded to meet the demand of our clients in Northern Ireland.

I believe Fuelwise are well positioned for the future. With our clients foremost in mind we aim to offer the best service available, what ever shape that may take over the next 20 years.

Fuelwise have the advantage of having family roots with the structure of a corporate organisation. We are large enough to make sure we can pass on savings through bulk buying and also investing in new technologies which keep us ahead of the market, yet small enough to care and adapt quickly to an ever changing market place.

We remember what it was like to struggle to make our business a success and can therefore be sympathetic to you, our client. At the same time we continue to meet every need for the established business that expect a professional service and are looking for exceptional customer service.
